At the foot of the southern slopes of the Low Tatras, deep in the mountains among the coniferous forests, lies a silent witness of horror. These are the traces of a settlement. In the mildly steep valley, at an altitude of 924 meters, the village of Kalište still stood in the beginning of March 1945.
Today it would be futile to look for clues and details of its development. Only the foundations of demolished and burned houses, cemeteries, two houses with a chapel and a lonely, half-buried tree above the tomb of fallen partisans are silent witnesses of tragic events. On 18 March 1945 the village was razed. The surviving people moved away. Perhaps somewhere in the Nazi archives there is an order, where beside the name Kalište lies the fatal word “liquidieren”.
